Dr Phil Nelson

Researcher biography
Phil is Manager, Innovation and Commercial Development at UniQuest, the University of Queensland’s main commercialisation company.
Phil has worked in senior management roles across technical and commercial functions with over a decade of international experience in technology companies.
He started his career with Johnson Matthey in fuel cell R&D at their UK technology centre. Following this, Phil took on the role of Technical Manager at Nanotecture Limited, a UK based start-up which Phil had founded with University of Southampton colleagues to commercialise nanotechnology-enabled energy storage devices. In his 5 years at Nanotecture, Phil led the technology development program, managed the patent portfolio and was a key player in business development and venture capital fundraising activities. Following this, Phil moved to a more commercial role in the pharmaceutical industry, leading the business development activity of the drug delivery division of Hovione, a Lisbon based international pharmaceutical company. At Hovione, Phil worked for two years with US, European, Japanese and Australian pharmaceutical company partners, conducting licensing, royalty monetisation and technology development transactions around Hovione’s inhalation drug delivery devices.
Phil has a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Queensland a PhD in electrochemistry from the University of Southampton (UK) and an MBA from The Lisbon MBA, MIT Sloan’s European Affiliate Program. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
