Bei (Beatrice) Li specialises in Layered Double Hydroxide-based Nanoparticles as Multifunctional Theranostic Agents for Colon Cancer Treatment

​Chemotherapy has been widely used in cancer treatment. In recent years, combination of chemotherapy with other efficient therapies, such as photothermal and photodynamic therapies, has been populated to enhance the treatment efficiency and reduce the severe side effects. Up to now, many functional nanomaterials carrying diverse therapeutic components have been reported with a remarkable improvement in cancer treatment. With the nanotechnology advancements, more cost-effective anti-cancer therapeutic strategies have been proposed and extensively investigated, a promising one of which is nanotheranostics. Such a strategic nanosystem possesses two or more functions, such as diagnosis/imaging for cancer tissues, therapies for inhibiting cancer growth and detection for the therapeutic effect. One of these nanosystems is MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles that can be readily functionalised as theranostic agents. LDH nanoparticles have been found to be effective delivery vehicles for biomolecules (gene and siRNA), anionic anticancer drugs and anionic dyes with very good biocompatibility. The versatile composition enables LDH to be facilely doped with various metal ions. Based on these advantages my research focus is to develop transition metal-doped layered double hydroxide (M-LDH)  multifunctional nanoparticles as efficient theranostic agents.
