Enhancing the properties of cementitous materials with cellulose nano-particles.

The global use of concrete has risen to the point that each year 3 tonnes are produced per capita and this is only predicted to increase. Furthermore, cement production is highly energy intensive and is responsible for the release of a vast amount of greenhouse gases. The use of engineered nanomaterials as cement additives has been shown to greatly improve mechanical properties. Through this enhancement it may be possible to produce structures of equivalent strength with a reduced quantity of cement, ameliorating the environmental toll of booming construction.
