The Institute hosts a number of senior research fellows including Australian Research Council Future Fellows and National Health and Medical Research Council Research Fellows and is interested in attracting further Fellows to the Institute.

Following are some of the Fellowship opportunities available:

University of Queensland

University of Queensland Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

The fellowships are available for researchers with less than five years full-time professional research experience or equivalent part-time experience since the award of a PhD. Periods of eligible, non-overlapping career interruption will be taken into account

Australian Research Council (ARC)

Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)

Researchers who have been awarded a PhD within five years or, awarded a PhD within eight years and commensurate with a period of significant career interruption may be eligible to apply.

It is anticipated that up to 200 three-year Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards, including up to $40 000 per annum in project funds, may be awarded each year.

Future Fellowships

Four-year Fellowships for outstanding mid-career researchers with between five and 15 years research experience since the award of their PhD at the closing time of submission.

Up to 100 four-year Future Fellowships may be awarded each year, providing a salary awarded at one of three salary levels and up to $50,000 per annum project funding

Australian Laureate Fellowships

Australian Laureate Fellows will be researchers of international repute who will play a significant, sustained leadership and mentoring role in building Australia's international competitive research capacity.

Up to 17 five-year Australian Laureate Fellowships may be awarded each year, providing a salary supplement, in addition to a Level E professorial salary provided by the Administering Organisation; funding for up to two Postdoctoral Research Associates (five years) and two Postgraduate Researchers (four years); and up to $300,000 per annum project funding.

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

Early Career Fellowships

Four year Fellowships are provided to allow developing health and medical researchers of outstanding ability to undertake further training either in Australia or overseas. At 30 June in the year of application, no more than two years time must have elapsed since the applicants PhD was awarded.


Career Development Fellowships

The NHMRC four year Career Development Fellowship aims to develop Australian health and medical early to mid-career researchers so they establish themselves as independent, self-directed researchers

There are two levels of CDFs:

1.      CDF Level 1 (2 to up to 7 years post-doctoral experience);

2.      CDA Level 2 (7 to less than 12 years post-doctoral experience)

Advance Queensland Research Fellowships

The Queensland Government Advance Queensland Research Fellowships program supports scientists to undertake research that can have a positive impact on Queensland.

The following grants are available:

  • early career Fellowships (up to 5 years post-PhD research experience) - $180,000 over 3 years (excluding GST)
  • mid-career Fellowships (5 to 10 years post-PhD research experience)  - $300,000 over 3 years (excluding GST)

Applicants must have

  • have one or more partners, including at least one Queensland-based industry/end-user organisation
  • spend at least 50% of the fellowship physically co-located with at least one Queensland-based industry/end-user partner organisation
  • have matched cash funding from the applicant and/or partner organisations
