NMR Spectroscopy Equipment

Avance 300MHz (Solid State)

The Bruker 300 MHz Avance III solid-state (SS) NMR is designed for material characterisation, using a combination of spectroscopy and relaxometry

Solid-state NMR is non-destructive and requires only a small amount of material for analysis, depending on the isotope studied (50 mg or less). A combination of spectroscopy with spectral editing and relaxometry allows investigation of structural and dynamic properties, in addition to chemical composition.

We have expertise with a wide variety of materials, from newly-synthesised chemicals to polymers, complex inorganic composites, hybrid materials and mixed organic substances.

Research areas can include functionalised silica nanoparticles, clay-based materials, coal/carboniferous materials, zeolites, plant-based materials, natural polymers and complex mixtures, as well as food science.

Instrument specifications

7.41 Tesla (300 MHz) wide bore superconducting magnet interfaced with a two-channel Bruker Avance III spectrometer with temperature control unit.

Capabilities include:

  • Avance III HD console (2 channels) with high-power proton decoupling and temperature control
  • Heteronuclear NMR: 7Li, 11B, 13C, 23Na, 27AI, 29Si, 31P
  • 4.0 mm MAS HX probe. Maximum spinning rate 9 kHz. Wide range of isotope frequencies are available. Temperature range: -30 to +70°C
  • 7 mm static probe. Single channel (13 to 123 MHz)
  • 4 mm MAS X-H (1H or 19F) Doty probe

For more information or if you have any queries about benefits of SS NMR for your project, please contact the Facility Manager.

• Avance III HD console (3 channels)
• Magnet: 11.47 Tesla
• BBFO smart probe – 19F
• Multinuclear NMR: 119Sn, 77Se, 29Si, 31P,  27AI
• Variable temperature, low and high extended range, etc
• Research applications include small molecules, natural products, biological compounds and material science

For more information, please contact the Facility Manager.

Avance HD III 700MHz

The Bruker Avance 700 MHz spectrometer is used in a broad range of life science and materials research. The spectrometer has a cooled high-throughput sample changer that enables metabolomic and fragment library screening.

The high sensitivity of the cryoprobe allows the investigation of small quantities of compounds such as in natural product structural elucidation and conformational studies.

This instrument is ideal for use in metabolomics, natural product chemistry,  pharmacy and biotechnology, synthetic chemistry, nutritional science and molecular diagnostics research.

Capabilities include:

  • Cooled SampleJet high-throughput sample handling and analysis system (480 samples)
  • Magnet: 16.44 Tesla
  • 4 channels
  • Triple resonance cryoprobe (13C/15N/1H) with 19F capability
  • Avance III HD console
  • Observable nuclei: H, F, C, N and D

For more information, please contact the Facility Manager.

Avance Neo 900MHz

The ultra-high resolution Bruker Avance Neo 900 MHz spectrometer is a flagship instrument of the QNN facilities, based at the University of Queensland.

The Avance 900 is the highest field strength NMR spectrometer available in Australia. The instrument is fitted with a triple-resonance TCI cryoprobe for higher signal-to-noise and a temperature cooled SampleJet sample changer.

The system is optimised for biomolecular studies and provides high-resolution, three-dimensional structures of membrane proteins, complex carbohydrates, nucleic acids, protein-protein complexes, natural products and is able to map macromolecular interactions. These studies are not possible on lower field systems. The system offers unparalleled sensitivity and resolution for NMR-based metabolomics studies.

Capabilities include:

  • Triple resonance cryoprobe (13C/15N/1H)
  • 21.14 Tesla, pumped magnet (2K)
  • Observable nuclei: H, C, N and D
  • Seamless interface for non-uniform sampling (Topspin 3.2)
  • Sample changer (480 samples)
  • 4 channels
  • High-throughput screening using a cooled SampleJet (metabolomics, drug/fragment screening)
  • Compatible with salt tolerant sample spinners
  • Optimal for studies of very large molecules where the field-dependent TROSY effect allows for NMR signals to be measured for complexes up to 1 MDa
  • Avance Neo Console: highest advanced software
