Cellular responses to microgravity
Jonathon Egan's research involves the study of cellular behaviour in microgravity to understand the physical, genetic and biochemical mechanisms behind the health defects (i.e. loss of bone density) observed in bed-ridden patients as well as astronauts following their exposure to the microgravity environment found in space. This project employs a combination of 3D cell culture, analysis and microscopy techniques to observe the effects of simulated microgravity on cellular structure, function and growth over time.
Jonathon is a UQ graduate, having completed his bachelor's degree in Biotechnology (Honours) at UQ in 2019. He began his PhD at AIBN in July 2020 under the supervision of Prof Alan Rowan and Dr Jan Lauko.
