This project investigates neuronal fatty acid metabolism, focusing on the phospholipase A1 enzyme DDHD2 and its role in generating endogenous saturated free fatty acids (sFFAs). It examines how these lipids support neuronal bioenergetics and function, challenging the long-held view that brain energy relies primarily on sugars. By defining the DDHD2–sFFA pathway and its contribution to neuronal activity, this work aims to uncover fundamental mechanisms of brain metabolism and their relevance to neurological disease.
