The bioeconomy is our path to decarbonisation – as it will shift the global economy’s reliance on oil to biological materials. 

We will have a more sustainable, prosperous future by developing new materials, medicines and fuels from biological materials, or creating them from waste using biological processes.

At the AIBN, we are world renowned in systems biology. We map the  processes of biology at the nano-scale  –  in the gene, genome and protein level of organisms. These insights allow us to harness cells to manufacture future chemicals, foods and medicine in a way that will change the game for our planet. 

Our work in the bioeconomy space is helping develop stronger economies, address the loss of jobs and industries arising from an over-reliance on fossil fuels, and create a more sustainable footprint overall.

We are here to create breakthrough solutions in the bioeconomy so we welcome partnerships with industry, government and philanthropic organisations.

Case studies

We are developing new materials, medicines and fuels from biological materials, or creating them from waste. For example, we are:

AIBN researchers are working on ways to improve the efficiency of biofuel and chemical manufacture while recycling waste carbon – by better understanding the gene function of bacteria.
Spinifex from the Queensland outback has been used to develop innovative injectable medical gels to treat arthritis and osteoarthritis, help deliver drugs more efficiently to the body, and for use in cosmetic procedures.
