The AIBN offers exciting research projects for potential Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) students.

 Available Student Projects

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs at AIBN include the  Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the Master of Philosophy (MPhil). HDR students produce new knowledge and expertise that is innovative, relevant and progressive. 

The UQ Graduate School provides central administration for the PhD and MPhil degrees at UQ.

Entry requirements, rules, duration and assessment

The UQ Graduate School manages scholarships that cover tuition fees, overseas student health cover, and a living stipend, which is paid fortnightly to students. Potential students can apply at any time for admission to higher degree by research programs. Candidates who wish to be considered for scholarship should note that there are two scholarship selection rounds per year. Please see the Graduate School Scholarships website for detailed information and timelines.

Once enrolled, confirmed students can apply to the Graduate School for a Candidate Development Award, which provides funding for professional development, placements, industry experience, and conference presentations.

The AIBN is located in Brisbane, one of the fastest-growing cities in Australia, which is known for its vibrant urban precincts, outdoor lifestyle and friendly locals. Brisbane is a green city with an enviable subtropical climate and diverse population.

Visit UQ student services

  1. Review the available projects at our Student Projects or AIBN Projects pages to identify your area of interest and a potential advisor.
  2. Discuss your potential PhD or MPhil project with an AIBN Researcher. When contacting researchers, please send them your CV and academic records
  3. Once you find a researcher who is willing to support your application, submit an Expression of Interest form to rhd.aibn@uq.edu.au.
  4. If you are invited to apply, you will be asked to submit an online application. As part of that process, you will need to upload a  number of supporting documents. Applicants from China, please note additional documentary requirements.
  5. When the AIBN student team receives your application, they will request referee reports through the online system from the referees you have listed. Once referee reports and other requested documents are received, your proposed advisor at AIBN will complete a School Recommendation Form, and your full application will be sent to the Graduate School for assessment. Once this has been done, your application will change to ‘in process’ in the online application system.
  6. From this point forward, the UQ Graduate School admissions team will communicate with you via the online application system and your assessment outcome will be sent via this system as well. Applicants must be assessed as ‘eligible for admission and scholarship’ to be considered in the next available UQ scholarship round.
