Blakey Group
High performance polymeric/hybrid materials
The Blakey group seeks to understand the relationships between the structure of polymeric/hybrid materials and their performance in applications such as nanomedicine, sensors and nanofabrication.
A key theme of the groups research is designing polymers with functional groups that can mediate their behaviour at material interfaces or surfaces for the controlled self assembly of hybrid particles or nanostructured thin films.
As well as excelling in their research project, PhD candidates are encouraged to develop transferable skills during their candidature through development programs offered by UQ. Graduates from the Blakey group have successful careers in academia, industry and government.

Research Approach
AIBN has world class research infrastructure for the characterisation of the chemical structure, morphology and surface properties of polymer and nanomaterials. In addition, AIBN houses state of the art instrumentation for nanofabrication including advanced lithography tools, atomic layer deposition and plasma etching. Together these tools allow us to develop a fundamental understanding of how functional designer materials behave at interfaces or surfaces, with the aim to generate impact in the areas of computer chip manufacture, nanosenors and nanomedicines.
